Aspiring UT Entrepreneurs Take Next Step to Making Their Ventures a Reality

On February 1, four teams from the University of Texas at Austin will participate in the annual Texas Moot Corp® Finals Competition. The Competition has become an annual launch for aspiring entrepreneurs who are graduate students at UT Austin.

The competing teams are a diverse group with varied backgrounds: Phurnace Software and Extension Eleven come from the Texas Evening MBA program; CleanLine comes from the full-time MBA program, and Remedy Diagnostics is a team from the Master of Science in Science and Technology Commercialization program at the IC2 Institute. See Schedule for team presentation times.

All four represent exceptional potential for viable ventures:

  • Extension Eleven - Helping companies develop products that customers love
Software companies face a never ending stream of trade-off decisions which must be addressed: time-to-market, cost, quality, short-term vs. long-term revenue and customer satisfaction. This hosted software solution encourages customer collaboration in the prioritization of generational development and simplifies the process of collecting and aggregating customer feedback.

  • CleanLine
CleanLine Technologies is building the world’s first service designed to filter the Internet as it enters the home for all devices plugged into the broadband network. CleanLine's launch product will focus on parental control over Internet content for gaming consoles and computers.
Travis McCollum, David Flory, Michael Gagne, Yihong Zeng

  • Phurnace Software
Phurnace Software automates J2EE configuration and deployment, making Enterprise Applications simple to install and maintain. Using our J2Install product, companies dramatically reduce deployment times and configuration errors, allowing them to focus all their energies on their product - not on how to install it.

  • Remedy Diagnostics, Inc.
Remedy Diagnostics' mission is to improve human health through the commercialization of innovative diagnostic imaging devices. Its initial product, STAT DetectTM, is a 3-D imaging solution offering superior performance for breast cancer detection. This pain-free test will reduce health care costs, improve cash flow for physicians, revolutionize preventive care for women and increase survival rates for cancer patients.

  • The four teams were chosen from the eight teams competing in the Texas Moot Corp Semifinals Competition on Wednesday, January 25. The winner of the Finals wins a free year in the Austin Technology Incubator, a spot in the prestigious Global Moot Corp® Competition plus a wealth of industry and venture capital contacts.

The Competition simulates the real-world process of raising venture capital. It is a unique partnership that brings together MBAs and business leaders. The judges function as an investment group seeking to reach consensus on the business venture they would most likely fund. The quality of the idea, the strength of the management team and the clarity and persuasiveness of the written plan and oral presentation all influence the judges’ decisions.

The public is invited to view the presentations. The Finals will be held on Wednesday, February 1 at the MCC Building, 3925 West Braker Lane, beginning at 4 PM. The presentations will be held in the first floor Auditorium. There will be a reception at 7 PM at North by Northwest, 10010 Capital of Texas Highway North, to announce the winner. Click for directions.

The Texas Moot Corp® Competition is hosted by the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. The Moot Corp Competition was the first competition of its kind focused on entrepreneurship and is the oldest operating inter-business school new-venture competition in the world. The Global Moot Corp Competition is recognized as “the Super Bowl of world business-plan competition.”
