Enterprise Software Installer Wins Texas Moot Corp Competition

Phurnace Software, a company that plans to ease the pain of installing software for enterprise web applications, beat out three teams to win the Texas round of the Moot Corp® Competition, the new venture competition hosted annually at The University of Texas at Austin's McCombs School of Business.

As winner of the Texas round, Phurnace Software qualifies to receive a year's office space in the Austin Technology Incubator and advancement to the Global Moot Corp® Competition in Austin this May.

"Moot Corp has been such a great experience. Through the competition, I have met advisors, investors, and even potential customers, as well as getting top notch advice from some of the best people in town. The exposure has been phenomenal. It's just the beginning for Phurnace, but I can't think of a better way to start," said Daniel Nelson, President of Phurnace Software.

The dominant technology in enterprise web applications is Java 2, Enterprise Edition, or J2EE. Phurnace Software automates J2EE configuration and deployment, making Enterprise Applications simple to install and maintain. Using their J2Install product, companies dramatically reduce deployment times and configuration errors, allowing them to focus all their energies on their product - not on how to install it.

Since J2Install can automate the deployment of code to multiple vendors, it is ideally suited to mitigate the pain of deployment for its customers. J2Install, supports BEA Systems’ Weblogic, and IBM’s Websphere. It will soon support JBoss, and Oracle application servers. Combined, these vendors represent 65% of the total available application server market.

"Our vision is to be the InstallShield of the Enterprise market," said Nelson.

Phurnace Software is headed by Daniel Nelson, who is an original founder. Nelson has ten years of experience in the software development industry, eight of which are in senior management positions in Operations, Project Management, and Quality Assurance. Nelson has spent the last six years working specifically with J2EE technologies. Most of his work has been in start up software companies such as Isochron Data, drkoop.com, NetObjects, and SurfWatch Software. He will receive his MBA from the McCombs School of Business in May 2006.

“Competitors this year were focusing on medical and computer technology, which reflects the current trends of institutional venture investments,” said Rob Adams, Director of the Moot Corp Program. “The judges had a tough decision. All four teams represented companies with viable investment potential.”

Phurnace Software beat out three other finalists in the Texas round of the 2006 competition:

CleanLine Technologies
CleanLine Technologies is building the world’s first service designed to filter the Internet as it enters the home for all devices plugged into the broadband network. CleanLine's launch product will focus on parental control over Internet content for gaming consoles and computers.

Extension Eleven - Helping companies develop products that customers love
Software companies face a never ending stream of trade-off decisions which must be addressed: time-to-market, cost, quality, short-term vs. long-term revenue and customer satisfaction. This hosted software solution encourages customer collaboration in the prioritization of generational development and simplifies the process of collecting and aggregating customer feedback.

Remedy Diagnostics, Inc.
Remedy Diagnostics' mission is to improve human health through the commercialization of innovative diagnostic imaging devices. Its initial product, STAT DetectTM, is a 3-D imaging solution offering superior performance for breast cancer detection. This pain-free test will reduce health care costs, improve cash flow for physicians, revolutionize preventive care for women and increase survival rates for cancer patients.

Moot Corp® simulates the process of raising venture capital. It is a unique partnership that brings together MBAs and business leaders. The judges function as an investment group seeking to reach consensus on the business venture they would most likely fund.
The judges base their decision on the quality of the idea, the strength of the management team and the clarity and persuasiveness of the written plan and oral presentation.

The Texas Moot Corp® Competition is hosted by the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. The Moot Corp Competition was the first competition of its kind focused on entrepreneurship and is the oldest operating inter-business school new-venture competition in the world. The Global Moot Corp Competition is recognized as the Super Bowl of world business-plan competition. For more on the Moot Corp Program, visit www.mootcorp.org.
